What is the difference between wool and closed-cell foam insulation?
We use both wool and closed-cell foam insulation in our van projects. Closed-cell foam insulation is a closed-cell material that is impermeable to water vapor. It is best suited for metal surfaces, to which it is tightly glued and the seams are taped to prevent moisture from condensing on the metal. Ewona wool is a very insulating and lightweight material that is suitable for filling cavities and hollow spaces. The best result is achieved when utilizing both materials for insulating a van.
How thick an insulation do I need?
For the walls and ceiling, our 19 mm foam rubber is suitable. For cavities, choose either 30mm or 50mm wool, depending on the available space.
How do I install insulation?
Closed-cell foam (ArmaFlex, Kaiflex)
Our product range consists of closed-cell foam with an adhesive backing, which facilitates installation.
- Wash the metal sheet with water and wipe dry. Dust will prevent adhesion.
- Remove grease with a silicone remover or an insulation manufacturer's cleaning agent.
- Treat rust spots with a rust converter and paint. Rust left under the insulation will continue to spread invisibly.
- Measure and cut with a utility knife or scissors. Make the piece slightly oversized – closed-cell foam is flexible and will compress into place.
- Start attaching from one corner. Peel off the protective paper only a little at a time and press the insulation onto the metal as you go. If you pull off the entire paper at once, the sheet will stick to itself and cannot be removed.
- Tape all seams with closed-cell foam tape. An untaped seam is a hole in the vapor barrier, and moisture will find it. A continuous glued surface acts as the vapor barrier itself.
- For profiles and sleeves, thinner 6–10 mm is sufficient because there is less space – but they must be insulated, otherwise they will be cold bridges.
Ewona wool
- Cut with a sharp insulation knife. A utility knife tears the fiber, an insulation knife cuts cleanly.
- Attach with heat-resistant spray adhesive (e.g., Eaglefelt Trim Adhesive). Spray a thin layer on both surfaces, let it set for a moment, and press into place.
- Fill the cavity loosely. Wool insulates due to air; if it is compacted by pressing, the insulation performance decreases.
- Do not place wool directly against the metal without closed-cell foam underneath if you want the most effective insulation possible.
Wool is non-dusting and does not require a respirator, which makes it significantly more pleasant to install than mineral wool.
